Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any major honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
